Champagne tasting

Welcome to a champagne tasting out of the ordinary at Dufweholms Herrgård outside Katrineholm. The ship Jönköping was sunk off the Finnish coast in 1916 when she was on her way to Russia with wine, cognac and champagne. For more than 80 years the ship lay at the bottom of the sea, until the treasure hunter Claes Bergwall and his team recovered about 2000 bottles of champagne from the wreck.

Because the bottles rested at the bottom of the sea for so long, they now need to be preserved in the same way. That's why at Dufweholms Herrgård in Sörmland, we've rebuilt our wine cellar to both serve and display around 100 of these unique bottles. Instead of walls in the wine cellar, we now have aquariums where the champagne can rest in water, just as it has done since 1916. Until some enthusiast decides to uncork a bottle...

Wrecked champagne

In 1895, the ship Jönköping, which was a schooner, was built and launched in Sjötorp at Värnen.
On October 28, 1916, she set sail from Gävle for her tenth voyage across the Åland Sea towards Rauma, the Finnish port city.
Included in the cargo were barrels of wine for the Bank of Finland and cognac and champagne for the Russian Imperial Army ordered by Tsar Nicholas II.

The champagne on board came from the well-known champagne house Heidseck & co Monopole.
In the early 20th century, the champagne was one of the most prestigious, and was drunk in royal houses around Europe. It is said to have been drunk by Tsar Nicholas II, the German Emperor, the Emperor of Austria-Hungary and also by the English royal house.

An ancient treasure to say the least - which you now have the chance to taste, in the cellar of Dufweholm Manor, where the precious bubbly is stored and refined.
